Wednesday, 8:30 p.m. “I’ve ordered the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Can you have it ready by Friday?”

In one sentence: setting up a company iPhone should not mean IT has to spend an hour and a half with the device in hand. With Apple Business Manager and a UEM platform, enrollment, policies, apps, Wi-Fi, VPN and other corporate settings can be prepared before the box is even opened.

Without that platform, the week plays out as usual: a meeting with the CEO, Wi-Fi passwords read aloud, the email app configured by hand and a fair amount of time spent on the process. With UEM, the week looks different.

This matters especially with the iPhone 18 Pro. The device arrives in stores on September 18, four days after the release of iOS 27, and may introduce changes to the eSIM process depending on the country. The problem is not getting a new iPhone working. It is doing so without creating a manual exception in a fleet that should be automated.

Thursday: check whether the iPhone is in Apple Business Manager

Before setting anything up, there is a question IT should ask, and almost nobody does: where was the iPhone purchased?

If the device is purchased through supported corporate channels and linked to the relevant customer or reseller number, it appears in Apple Business Manager before it even leaves the warehouse. When Applivery is configured as the management server, the new iPhone is automatically assigned to the company’s workspace. It arrives on the CEO’s desk already linked, without anyone having seen it.

What if the iPhone is bought from an Apple Store as a personal purchase?

If it is bought at retail without being linked to Apple Business Manager, the device will not automatically appear in the organization. It can be added later with Apple Configurator for iPhone, but the process requires erasing it. Better to settle this on Thursday, while the box is still unopened, than on Friday, when the weekend photos are already on the phone.

Thursday: prepare the policy the iPhone will receive

The next step is not to touch the device, but to prepare what it needs to receive. An Apple policy in Applivery brings together restrictions, passcode requirements, Wi-Fi, VPN, email and apps that install automatically. If the organization already has a policy for other executives, it only needs to assign it to the new serial number, or let a default enrollment and assignment rule do that as soon as the device appears.

Saturday: decide what to do about iOS 27

“And I saw that iOS 27 comes out on Monday. Should I install it?”

iOS 27 will be available on Monday, September 14, so the CEO may see the notification on their current iPhone before the new one even arrives. In a corporate fleet, a major update should not depend on each user’s decision. The safer approach is to update a pilot group first, validate apps, profiles and policies, and then expand the rollout to the rest of the fleet.

In Applivery, the deferral is set in Restrictions for between 1 and 90 days. Updates can then be accelerated with individual or bulk commands from Devices. The full process is covered in the OS update management guide. That way, Monday’s iOS 27 notification appears first on the devices where the update needs to be tested, not on the CEO’s iPhone.

Siri AI in the European Union: IT’s decision before anyone asks

Siri AI, the new assistant, will not have the same availability across all platforms in the EU at launch. It is being released in beta with usage limits. If the organization already has a position on AI assistants and the handling of corporate data, now is the time to decide how it applies to each platform and communicate it, before the difference between an employee’s Mac and iPhone becomes an improvised exception.

Friday the 18th: the iPhone 18 Pro arrives

If the device was correctly linked to Apple Business Manager and the UEM platform, the CEO turns on the iPhone, chooses a language and connects to a network. The company name appears during setup and automated enrollment begins. The device is supervised and receives its policy, apps, email, VPN and passcode requirements without IT having to touch it.

The important work was already done before the box arrived. Your part happened on Thursday.

How to manage the iPhone’s corporate eSIM

The iPhone 18 Pro is eSIM-only in several markets (Spain retains the physical SIM tray), and businesses with users in the affected countries need to review how they activate and transfer lines. When the carrier offers corporate provisioning, the UEM platform can automate much of eSIM provisioning. On iOS, a command gives the device the carrier’s server address, and the phone downloads its profile itself, without visits to a carrier store or QR codes forwarded over WhatsApp.

The SIM or eSIM is recorded in the inventory and linked to the device that uses it. If the device is reassigned, replaced or lost, IT knows which line it had. The prerequisite is that the carrier offers eSIM provisioning for businesses.

What IT can check after setting up the iPhone

Apple handles data migration between the old and new devices when they are together. The UEM platform is not involved in that process, nor should it be.

What it does provide is visibility: the OS version, installed apps and compliance status can be checked from the platform. When someone asks whether an executive’s iPhone meets the security policy, the answer is on a screen, not in someone’s memory.

October: the same issue returns with the iPhone Duo

The iPhone Duo arrives on October 23, with Spain included in the first wave. It brings back the same discussion, with a few differences: it ships with iOS 27.1, uses Touch ID instead of Face ID and is eSIM-only worldwide, so there is no physical SIM tray to fall back on. Its 7.6-inch inner display with Split View also introduces a new format for internal apps, which should be tested before the CEO tries them in a client meeting. Ask the carrier about its eSIM process now, rather than during the week of October 23.

What a UEM platform prevents when setting up a company iPhone

The difference is not whether the device can be configured. It is how it is configured and what happens afterwards. Nobody needs to read out the Wi-Fi password or configure the VPN by hand. The update to iOS 27 follows a policy rather than a user’s decision. And the security status can be checked on a screen.

Automation also prevents two common surprises: discovering too late that the device was purchased outside Apple Business Manager, and having to improvise the activation of a corporate line when the CEO already has the phone in hand.

Frequently asked questions about setting up company iPhones

What happens if a company iPhone is purchased outside Apple Business Manager?

The device will not automatically appear in Apple Business Manager. It can be added later with Apple Configurator for iPhone, but the process requires erasing it. It is best to add it before the user starts working with it.

How can I stop a user from installing iOS 27 before IT validates it?

By deferring updates through the management policy. In Applivery, a deferral of between 1 and 90 days can be configured while a pilot group tests the new version first.

Can a corporate eSIM be provisioned through a UEM platform?

Yes, provided the carrier supports eSIM provisioning for businesses. On iOS, the device receives the information needed to download the carrier profile, and the SIM or eSIM is then linked to the device in the inventory.

Setting up a company iPhone should happen before the box is opened

When a corporate device is properly added to Apple Business Manager and the UEM platform, almost all of IT’s work happens before the user turns it on. Enrollment, policies, apps and many restrictions are no longer manual tasks repeated for every new iPhone.

The next time an executive writes on a Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. to say they have bought an iPhone, the question that matters is not what to do. It is whether you already did it on Thursday.

If an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone Duo is joining your fleet, manage the process with Applivery and prepare automated enrollment, updates and eSIM before the device arrives.
